In this blog, we explain how solar lights work and answer other common questions about them. For more details, be sure to check out our FAQ section on solar lights.

How do solar lights work?

As the name suggests, solar lights are lighting systems powered by solar energy. These eco-friendly lights charge during the day using sunlight and provide illumination at night. The key components of solar lights include a rechargeable solar battery, an LED light, and a photoresistor, which detects the absence of light. The photovoltaic process converts solar energy into usable electricity.

Here’s how solar lights work:

Photovoltaic (PV) cells collect energy – During the day, the solar panel absorbs sunlight and charges the internal battery.

The solar light turns on – At dusk, built-in sensors detect low light levels, triggering the battery to power the LED light.

The solar light turns off – When sunlight returns in the morning, the lights automatically turn off.

The solar light recharges – Every day, the unit recharges itself. On cloudy days or in winter, charging may be less efficient, but high-quality units can still charge and function on overcast days.

And that’s it! Once installed, solar lights can last for many years, depending on the quality and manufacturer. No wiring or mains electricity is needed—just clean, renewable solar energy.

Do solar lights need batteries?

No, solar lights already come with a built-in battery that is charged by solar power. There’s no need to replace it, as the battery is essential for the light’s operation and is designed to last for many years, depending on the manufacturer.

For example, in our Solareye80 units, we use a long-life LFP battery with an estimated lifespan of over 8 years, so you won’t need to worry about replacing it anytime soon.

Do solar lights need sunlight or any light?

Most solar lights require sunlight to charge, as daylight provides the most effective and efficient energy. While artificial light may have some effect and allow for limited charging, it is not as effective as direct sunlight in powering the lights.

Do solar lights work in winter or in the shade?

Yes, solar lights work in winter and in the shade, but not as effectively.

Solar lights charge most efficiently when exposed to direct sunlight, such as during the summer months. The more sunlight they receive, the longer and brighter they will stay lit. However, even in winter, there is still sunlight (though not always direct) that can charge solar lights. The same applies to shade—while solar lights will still charge in shaded areas, the process will be slower.

Our Solareye80 solar ground lights are specifically designed for Northern European conditions. With a full charge (after 8 hours of sunlight), they can illuminate for over 200 hours—equivalent to 8 full days or 2 weeks of January nights. This ensures optimal performance and reserves charge for cloudier days. Additionally, these lights are built to operate in temperatures ranging from -20°C to +70°C, so you don’t need to worry about extreme weather conditions.

How long do solar lights stay on?

Most solar lights have an automatic on/off detection system, turning off during daylight hours and turning on when it gets dark. With a full charge, our solar lights can stay on for over 200 hours of steady illumination or over 300 hours when flashing.

Where can solar lights be installed?

Solar lights can be installed almost anywhere, as long as they have access to sunlight since they don't require wiring for power. They are perfect for outdoor spaces and can be used as ground lights, bollards, lamps, or even installed on roofs, making them ideal for areas like outhouses and sheds.

Please note: If you plan to install the lights on vertical walls or fences, they should receive at least some direct sunlight for optimal performance. If you're unsure about the best placement, it's always a good idea to consult the manufacturer for advice.

How are solar lights installed?

The installation of solar lights can vary depending on the application, from ground installations to roof setups. Since no wires or additional power sources are required, installing solar lights is incredibly simple!

Typically, solar lights are either fixed to a surface or slotted into a small, pre-drilled hole. You can install them yourself by following expert guidance, or if you prefer, we offer installation packages to ensure a professional service from purchase to setup.

Are solar lights good for the environment?

Absolutely! Solar lights are great for the environment for several reasons. They use renewable energy, help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, require minimal infrastructure, and provide long-lasting solutions. Additionally, they can reduce light pollution, which has positive effects on nocturnal animals.
